OPERA (Organic Phosphor for Efficient Remote LED Applications) is an ENIAC JU project financed by the European Union involving the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) and the companies Philips Electronics (The Netherlands), Philips Lighting (The Netherlands), Syncom (The Netherlands), Wacker Chemie (Germany) and Nanocomp (Finland).

Goals

Europe faces the challenge to reduce electrical energy consumption by 20% to 30% before 2020, and a key ingredient will be energy efficient inorganic Light-Emitting Diodes (LED), the emerging technology which will soon dominate the lighting market. The ENIAC JU project OPERA will demonstrate affordable, highly efficient LED light engines, based on compact optics and on new, inherently lower-cost organic phosphor materials, providing a solid basis for long-term European manufacturing.
